PROBE: A Prospective Database of Infants with Cholestasis

What is the purpose of the study?

The purpose of the study is to collect detailed information on infants with cholestasis (blockage of bile flow) in order to learn about the causes of liver disease in infants and better understand the natural history of the disease. Knowledge obtained from the information and samples collected during this study may help investigators improve the treatment of these diseases.

What will be done?

At entry into the study, a detailed medical history of the child and parents will be taken, including pregnancy history. Additional blood samples will be obtained for research purposes at the time of clinical blood draws. Parental blood will be obtained as well. If the child requires surgery, tissue samples will be obtained. Routine follow-up visits will be completed periodically. At specific ages the child will undergo developmental testing.

Who can enroll?

Infants up to 6 months of age who are diagnosed with cholestasis (blockage of bile flow) are eligible for enrollment.

How long does the study last?

The study can be as short as 6 months or as long as 10 years, depending on the child's liver disease.
